The SAE International Journal of Connected and Automated Vehicles furthers the state of the art of engineering research by promoting high-quality theoretical and applied investigations in the arena of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) in on-road, off-road, and aerial operational environments.

The article in this special issue reviews the state of verification and validation (V&V) methods to establish the desired level of safety for automated driving system (ADS)-equipped vehicles. It reviews studies related to V&V of ADS, provides a summary of V&V activities being conducted around the world, describes simulation tools that have been developed for V&V of ADS, and compiles a list of proving grounds with specific facilities or capabilities that can accommodate ADS-equipped vehicles.
